2 Book Reviews: Monster Island & Before I Go To Sleep

I finished Monster Island by David Wellington a few weeks ago and it wasn't exactly what I was expecting when I pulled it off the shelf at the library. I was in the mood for another zombie book and this came up on the library search. It is the first in a series of three books and I thought if I liked it enough, I'd read the next two. The beginning half of the book was pretty good. The basic story starts a short time after a global disaster and zombies inhabit most of the earth. A man who works for the U.N. as a weapons inspector lives in Somalia with his daughter. He and a group of teenage girl soldiers have to travel to New York City in seach of medicine for one of the countries leaders. However, NYC is crawling with zombies. Among the dead is one zombie who was a doctor in life and managed to retain his intelligence after being bitten. So far so good. Then something really weird happened and a mummy showed up who somehow could rule all the zombies with his thoughts. All the zombies had to build this shrine thing and they were going to take over the world. I don't know it got really weird with the mummies and the zombies being controlled. It took me way longer than it should have to finish the book because toward the end it was just not my cup of tea. I'm not going to continue the series and I think I'm over zombie books for a while.

I also just finished reading the book club book from July, Before I Go To Sleep by S.J.Watson. I wasn't able to get it at the library to read in time for book club but my friend Shannon let me borrow it after she had finished it. Everyone was saying how much they liked it and that the ending was a total twist so I had to borrow it!! It was most definitely a "page turner" as people say. It only took a few days to read because it was so good and suspensful I just couldn't put it down! The story is about a woman who has lost her memory over 20 years prior and wakes up every morning with no idea where she is or who the man in her bed is. We are lead to believe that she has tried all different treatments to help regain her memory but nothing works. She lives with her husband who has pictures all around the house to remind her of her life and he has to tell her who she is every morning. When I read the description it reminded me of '50 First Dates' with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. Some of the girls said it was similar to the movie 'Momento' but I've never seen it so I have no idea. Throughout the book the woman starts secretly seeing a doctor who believes he can help her. She starts keeping a journal that she writes in every day and then reads every morning to remind her of what her last few days have been like. We find out eventually that her husband has been keeping things from her, what really caused her memory loss, facts about her family, her friends, etc. The ending is soooo good and not at all what I was expecting!! I really suggest if you are looking for a good read to pick this one up!

We're Zombies...on a Clock

So remember this Amazing Find?! Well I got it in the mail on Saturday! I had received an email with the tracking info which said it would be delivered Saturday. I spent the afternoon staring out the window and when the mailman came I was stalking him like a hawk, watching his ever move until he got to my building!
I tore it open and saw pure awesome!!

Jenny from Off Her Rocker Art was a complete pleasure to work with!! We exchanged quite a few emails to get all the details worked out; hair color, eye color, what we'd be wearing, etc. The shirt that Jeremy has on is one of my favorites of his. It says 'RooK' and has a big rook chess piece on it. He wore it the third day we hung out and he told me that he plays chess when I asked him about it. That totally made me realize that there was more to him than meets the eye. Every time he wears it, I'm reminded of how amazing and complex he is. I'm wearing an angel wing necklace that is one of my absolute favorties which Liz got for me a few years ago while she was in Boston.
I am so happy with how this turned out and I highly recommend you all check out Jenny's shop, you won't be disappointed!

Zombie Magnets

Another thing I made for Jeremy's birthday were these cute little zombie magnets. I had seen the pattern a few times on Craftster and decided to make him some. The pattern is from NeedleNoodles. I used that plastic weave stuff and then sewed a piece of felt on the backs and stuck little magnets I found at Joanns between the back of the plastic and the felt.

That pattern is only for the guy so I just changed the hair to make a girl one too. The magnets are surprisingly strong which made me happy because that means Jeremy can actually use the magnets instead of just have them on the fridge for decoration.

Have a fabulous Wednesday!

Amazing Find!

So Jeremy's birthday is on the 27th and I already knew mostly what I was getting him. Earrings, a tshirt and making him something small. I didn't feel it was enough though. I mean for crying outloud, the kid gave me a car for my birthday this year! I've been in a bit of a crafting funk (I've been working a lot so when I get home I just want to lay down and do nothing.) and couldn't come up with anything awesome. Plus I make him SO MUCH as it is, he could probably use a break.

I decided I would look on etsy for something to get him. I searched for 'zombie' and found Off Her Rocker Art. I don't know how I never came across this shop before but I am STOKED!

Jenny will take pictures of either one person or a couple and zombify you onto a clock made from a record or just on a piece of wood or canvas. I am so freaking happy I found her shop!! There are some other equally awesome hand painted clocks but these custom zombies of Jeremy and I are going to be AMAZING!

He won't get it til after his birthday because she needs at least 2 weeks and I do not want to rush her in anyway. I asked him if he would mind and he said not at all, I explained that it will be well worth the way.
I will of course show you guys the awesomeness when it arrives but I just had to let you know about it now because I am so excited!

Featured...

The lovely Nicole saw my post about the Zombie Heart I crocheted for Jeremy last week and I had also posted a picture of an embroidery I did for him last year for his birthday. Now that I think about it, that was actually almost two years ago! His birthday is in February...anyway...she liked it so much she asked if she could feature it on her blog!
I of course felt so special and said yes!! Go check it out! She also is doing a free journal class that you can join, all things to be thankful for this month in the spirit of Thanksgiving!

Thanks Nicole!!

Anniversary Present

Today is 2 years that Jeremy and I have been together. We met on Oct. 3 2008 but it wasn't "official" until November 1st. Nothing fancy happened, he just dropped the BF-bomb on me.
My apartment complex put up new signs in the parking lot that said "Tenant Parking Only" As we parked and he saw this sign he said "Well I need a sign that says "boyfriend" of tenant parking"" And that was that. So cute!
We don't really do the mushy, romantic thing. We didn't do anything last year for our anniversary or even Valentine's Day. This year I decided that I wanted to make him a little something just because. Of course I thought of this idea Thursday night while laying in bed trying to fall asleep. With overtime and Halloween parties this weekend, I wasn't sure if I'd get it done in time. I hunkered down yesterday, had a horror movie marathon and whipped this guy up!
I'm pretty proud of myself, I found this pattern for a heart and decided I would just wing the eyes. I wanted one bigger and one smaller, give it that zombie feel LOL
I've made Jeremy a few Zombie/Love things in the past, that's how I got this idea. For his birthday last year I made him this embroidery.

This is what I made him this year for our Anniversary.

I definitely stole the way AmyDice makes her little guys look like zombies with the blood coming out of their mouths. I hope you don't mind Amy!!
I can't wait to give this to him tonight!
